Dialogue on "Self-portrait as women in Les Demoiselles d'Avignon"

In recent dialogue around Artist Jaimie Warren’s entire body of work, it’s been brought to our attention that a deep concern arose regarding her representation of people of color in some of her work. This dialogue sparked conversation about a piece of Jaimie’s art, titled “Self-portrait as women in Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (click link to view image), that Studios Inc used in our online competition, “COVID VIVANT”, as an example of tableau vivant as it recreated Pablo Picasso’s painting “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (click link to view image).

Studios Inc is committed to recognizing individuality, embracing all of the rich dimensions of diversity and always building an inclusive community. With an absolute respect for artist freedom and accountability, we support the dialogue which underpins the strength, vibrancy and elasticity of our arts community.

Studios Inc has zero tolerance for exclusion in any form. As a result of this dialogue which has enriched our perspective and Jaimie’s public reflections on her work, we are removing this image from our website and are deaccessioning it. Going forward, we also commit to review all art gifted from past, present and future resident artists with a more astute lens of racial justice and to continue to promote all forms of diversity and inclusion in our community.
